Epicor research shows that manufacturing leaders have much higher workplace morale than workers

Austin, Texas, September 3, 2024–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Accor’s new “Future of Jobs in Manufacturing” report reveals a significant gap in how manufacturing managers and frontline workers perceive workplace morale. By 2024, 57% of managers will rate morale highly, compared to just 45% of workers, highlighting a potential disconnect in understanding and addressing employee engagement.

Bridging this morale gap and ensuring managers and employees are aligned is especially important given a projected shortage of 3.8 million manufacturing employees and the need for leaders to address current challenges and prepare for future demands.

The report also found a gap in upskilling efforts, with 91% of managers seeing it as a priority but only 70% of employees seeing it as such, highlighting the need for improved communication and implementation.

Epicor surveyed more than 1,400 manufacturing leaders and 1,200 manufacturing workers worldwide to uncover key trends and strategies that will shape the future of the industry. These findings are intended to inform and guide executives, operations managers, production supervisors, IT leaders, and HR leaders as they develop and implement strategies to successfully scale their manufacturing operations.

Key findings:

  • Technology gap: While 52% of managers believe the workplace will be very modern in 2024, only 39% of workers agreed, suggesting a disparity in perceptions of technological advancements.

  • Sustainability priorities: Only around half of companies are prioritizing sustainability, with only 61% of managers and 45% of employees considering it important, pointing to the need for stronger and more visible sustainability efforts.

  • Supply Chain Challenges: Even though 75% of managers recognize the importance of supply chain resilience and sustainability, issues such as cost, regulatory hurdles and technology shortcomings remain obstacles.

  • Impact of automation: As awareness of the role of automation increases, workers are seeing a decline in immediate concerns, with 73% of managers and 53% of workers expecting their jobs to change due to automation.

  • Sales Trends: While employee-reported turnover decreased by 6% in 2024, manager-reported turnover increased by 25%, reflecting different experiences and views on workforce stability.
